24 in 48 Readathon WRAP UP!

So, in the month of January, I almost didn’t do any readathons, but decided to do this one VERY last minute! This readathon was interesting because the only challenge was to read a total of 24 hours over a 48 hour period. While that doesn’t sound hard, it really was! So let’s check out how I did!

P.S. I don’t think I can use the normal  format for this review. Honestly it will more of a book talk then a review.

Dark Matter – Black Crouch || REVIEW

So I heard a lot of great things about this book, about a year ago, and also haven’t read Sci-Fy in a long time. So did I enjoy it? Let’s find out!

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

From the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Rating – PG13 (Some intense scenes)

Length – 342 pages

Publication Date – 7 / 26 / 16

The Good :

  • It was a good premise. I was really intrigued by the synopsis and first 30 pages, but then……

The Meh :

  • Honestly everything about this book was just meh. I actually had a hard time getting myself to write this review because I don’t even have anything to say about it.
  • The characters were so bland, and this book really depended on you caring about them. The main character was just boring, his family was just a standard “care about me” book family, and there was another random chick and like why was she there?

The Bad :

  • This books plot was very centered on scientific theories, but the science was NEVER EXPLAINED! Tell me more please!! I’m still so annoyed about this.
  • The end was just…strange. They made me sympathetic for the “antagonists” to the point of not enjoying the outcome of the book.

  • STORY – 3.5/5 (I enjoyed it but there were so many plot holes)
  • CHARACTERS – 3/5 (OK)
  • WRITING – 3/5 (OK)
  • UNIQUENESS – 3.5/5 (I feel like I’ve heard this story before

ALL IN ALL I GAVE THIS BOOK 3.25 ALTERNATE DIMENSIONS OUT OF 5!

So sorry that this review is short…I just really didn’t have anything to say. I was so disappointed by this book, honestly.

Thanks for reading!

17. The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams REVIEW

I was in the mood for a fun easy read, and I’ve always heard great things about this book. Did I like this book? Let’s find out!

161493

PG (Some space violence) : 159 pages

Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox–the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod’s girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

The Good :

  • Okay, let’s start with something you have already heard about this book. Its HILARIOUS! I have never laughed so hard while reading a book. Seriously, the humor alone is a huge reason to pick up this book.
  • This is a classic space adventure, done well. There are lasers, spaceships, and aliens. What more can you ask for?
  • I liked all the characters. They were all pretty unique and so funny. Even those written to be slightly annoying are likable.
  • There are so many unique ideas, in this book. Most are for jokes, but the majority of this book has some sort of element that I have never read in another book before.

The Bad:

  • I felt like the characters got out of sticky situations too easily. Most of the time, it was because it was setting up a joke, but I would still like to see my protagonists using their skills.
  • The ending of this book was weak. I understand that this is a series, and it’s setting up for the next book, but regardless I expect it to have a solid ending. As you may know, a bad ending to a book is one of my reading pet peeves.

I really enjoyed reading this, it made me laugh out loud like twenty times. If you like science fiction, or to laugh, check this book out!

  • Characters – 3/5 (They were pretty average.)
  • Plot               – 3/5 (Basic end of the world/space adventure story. Nothing special.)
  • Writing        – 4/5 (Super funny!)
  • Uniqueness- 4/5 (Too many unique things to count!)

Overall I give the 3.5 Towels out of 5!

Have you read this book? What did you think about it? I would love to know!

16. Three Worlds Collide – Eliezer Yudkowsky REVIEW

I picked up this novella, written by a philosopher, on a whim. Did I like it? Let’s find out!

(This doesn’t actually have a cover so here is Marvin the Martian)

PG-13 (Some language) : ~100 pages

Three Worlds Collide is a story I wrote to illustrate some points on naturalistic metaethics and diverse other issues of rational conduct. It grew, as such things do, into a small novella. On publication, it proved widely popular and widely criticized. Be warned that the story, as it wrote itself, ended up containing some profanity and PG-13 content.

The Good:

This inspires serious thought about ethics and if our world has chosen the right path for itself.

  • This has an interesting view of aliens. You get your “classic” alien fix, but also a new view of aliens as well.
  • Without the philosophical content, this is still a good science fiction story. I mention this because even though I rave about how thought provoking it is, I don’t want to mislead you to think it is a boring read.

The Bad:

  • Don’t go into this book expecting action. You will not see any space battles in this. Just lots of conversations.
  • This can also become a little confusing. It does take some brain power to read.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this novella and loved the thinking it encouraged me to do after.

  • Characters – 4/5 (Not the most compelling.)
  • Plot               – 3/5 (Basic alien story)
  • Writing        – 4/5 (It’s not written by a professional author and it shows sometimes.)
  • Unique          – 5/5 (So thought provoking!)

Overall I give this 4 Babyeaters out of 5.

Have you read this? What did you think of it? I would love to know!
